What is an Adult Family Home (AFH)?

Summer 020

An Adult Family Home (AFH) is:

  • A place where 3 or 4 adults, not related to the operator, reside and receive care, treatment or service above the level of room and board.
  • Residents cannot receive more than 7 hours of nursing care per week.
  • Authority for the licensing of AFHs is based on Chapter 50, Wis Stats.
  • Standards for the operation of an AFH are found in Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapter HFS 88.

Bridges of Belonging will operate in the conformance with the following fundamental principles:
  • Faith:  the community shall be founded and dependent upon prayer and trust in God;
  • Unity:  the community members, who, despite any differences, shall live, work, pray, and celebrate together, resulting in community's unending commitment to each of its individual members;
  • Growth:  the community, through its faith and unity, shall foster its members' dignity and support the members' independence and participation in the decisions that concern them;
  • Integration:  the community shall seek to introduce its members to its neighbors through friendship and work, and the community shall also work with its neighbors in furtherance of justice for persons with disabilities.

Bridges of Belonging focuses on the Beatitudes - a set of Christian ideals that focus on love and humility.
  • Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land.
  • Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted.
  • Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill.
  • Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
  • Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God.
  • Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
  • Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
